Ford and Etal are two small villages in north Northumberland, about 10 miles from Berwick-upon-Tweed, joined as one estate. Between them sit a tower house, a Tudorbethan mansion, a restored water mill, a light railway and the Flodden battlefield of 1513. The sights are close together and reached by road or the Borders Bus 267, so most travellers see them in a day and sleep in Berwick, Wooler or Milfield.

Getting around

No local taxi: one would have to come out from Berwick, so plan around the bus or your own car. The sights sit within cycling distance of each other on quiet lanes. Borders Bus 267 links Berwick-upon-Tweed, Duddo, Ford and Etal and Wooler, six times Monday to Saturday, about 30 min from Berwick and another 25 min on to Wooler. Bus 464 goes to Wooler via Lowick instead.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet rural area and generally safe. The real risks are narrow lanes with no pavement, fast farm traffic, mud on the waterfall path and weather that turns on the fells; carry a charged phone and note the thin signal.
  • Etal Castle and Heatherslaw Corn Mill open April–October only; check dates before a winter trip.
  • Ford Castle is a residential outdoor centre and does not take tours: you can only look in through the gates.
  • No local taxi and a thin bus timetable: missing the last 267 leaves a long walk or an expensive ride from Berwick.
  • Mobile signal is basic; 5G does not reach this far inland.
  • Routin Linn waterfall needs a steep, muddy descent and can be nearly dry in summer.
