Strathcona is the oldest provincial park in British Columbia and the largest on Vancouver Island: 2,458 km² of the Vancouver Island Ranges, with the island's highest peaks, sub-alpine meadows, lakes and glaciers. There are no hotels or restaurants inside the park, so you choose a side — Buttle Lake on Highway 28, or Forbidden Plateau reached from Mount Washington — and drive in for the day or camp. Most of the park is a conservation area under the Strathcona Park Master Plan; a small working mine area, Strathcona-Westmin Provincial Park, sits inside the boundary.

How much does it cost to enter Strathcona Provincial Park?
Nothing. BC provincial parks have no day-use fee, so entry is free. You pay only for camping: about $20 per party per night at vehicle-accessible sites (2026 estimate) and roughly $10 per adult per night in the backcountry. A BC fishing licence is extra if you plan to fish.
What are the best hikes in Strathcona Provincial Park?
For an easy walk, the Paradise Meadows Barrier-Free Centennial Trail gives sub-alpine meadow without the climb. For a hard day, Flower Ridge climbs 1,200 m in 6 km from the Buttle Lake road to bare ridge with tent pads. Della Falls, 440 m high, is a 15.5 km trail usually done as a two- to three-day trip with a boat across Great Central Lake.
When is the best time to visit Strathcona Provincial Park?
July to September: alpine trails are mostly clear, days are long and the weather is driest. Snow can linger into July at moderate elevations, and campgrounds run 1 April to 31 October. Winter is for Nordic skiing and snowshoeing around Paradise Meadows, not for high routes.
Do I need a reservation to camp?
Not always, but book if you can. Of the 161 vehicle-accessible sites, 96 are reservable through BC Parks and the rest are first-come, first-served, which means arriving early on a summer weekend. Backcountry camping needs no reservation.
Is there gas or food in the park?
No. There are no commercial facilities inside the park, and no gas or services between Campbell River and Gold River on Hwy 28. Fill up and buy food in Campbell River, Gold River or the Comox Valley before you drive in.
Can I get phone signal in the park?
No. There is no cellular coverage inside the park; the nearest signal is in Campbell River or Gold River. Download maps before you leave and tell someone your plan.
How do I get to the park without a car?
It is difficult. Both access points — Hwy 28 at Buttle Lake and the Strathcona Parkway to Paradise Meadows — are reached by road, and there is no public transport into the park. Most visitors drive from Campbell River, Gold River or the Comox Valley.
