Roscommon is the county town of County Roscommon in Ireland's north-west midlands, a market town of about 6,500 people west of Lough Ree. Its own sights — a ruined 13th-century castle, a Dominican friary, a small county museum — fill half a day on foot. The reason to sleep here is the surrounding county: the Rathcroghan royal site at Tulsk, the National Famine Museum at Strokestown, Castlecoote House and the La Tène Castlestrange Stone. All of those need a car or a booked tour, so treat Roscommon as a one- or two-night stop on a midlands or west-of-Ireland drive, not a destination in itself.

Getting around

The town centre is walkable in 10–15 minutes end to end. For Rathcroghan, Strokestown, Castlecoote and Castlestrange you need a car, a taxi or a booked tour; there is no useful rural bus network. Trains run from Roscommon station to Athlone, Galway, Westport and Dublin, and Bus Éireann 440 stops at the hospital and Mart Road.

Safety

Roscommon is a low-crime town and safe to walk by day; at night stick to lit streets around The Square and Castle Street. The real risks are rural roads — narrow, unlit and used by farm machinery — and soft, unmarked ground at unstaffed sites.
  • Rural sites are unstaffed and often on minor roads with no footpath: park safely and do not block gates.
  • Rathcroghan and Castlerea Railway Museum are effectively by appointment or visitor-centre led — confirm before driving out.
  • Castlecoote House tours run June–August only; grounds open April–October.
  • Midges and soft ground along the River Suck and Lough Ree in summer.
  • Many town kitchens stop serving by 20:30–21:00; eat early or book.
