Thurmont is a small town of about 6,200 in northern Frederick County, Maryland, on US-15 between Frederick and Gettysburg. It is the practical bed base for Cunningham Falls State Park and Catoctin Mountain Park, and it swells to roughly 125,000 visitors for the Catoctin Colorfest craft weekend each autumn. There is no bus system and no car rental in town, so a car is the working assumption.

Getting around

Walk the town centre; drive for everything else. There is no local bus system and no car rental agency in Thurmont. US-15 is the spine north to Gettysburg and south to Frederick. During Colorfest weekend the town runs a temporary shuttle system because parking fills.

Safety

Thurmont is a low-crime small town; the real risks are deer on US-15 and MD-77 at dusk, summer heat on exposed trails, and driving after wine tasting at the local vineyard.
  • No car rental and no bus system in town: arrive with a vehicle or arrange a taxi in advance.
  • Hunting Creek Lake beach has limited capacity and turns people away, often by mid-morning on summer weekends and holidays.
  • Lake swimming is allowed only between the weekend before Memorial Day and Labor Day; lifeguards are typically on duty 11:00–18:00 in that window.
  • Cunningham Falls entrance fees are paid in cash at the gate.
  • Colorfest weekend takes over the town: roads close, rooms sell out and prices spike.
  • Camp David is a working presidential retreat inside Catoctin Mountain Park: no access, no photography, and some park areas close without notice.
