Lewisporte is a small deep-water port on Notre Dame Bay, 14 km north of the Trans-Canada Highway on Route 341. It has a marina, two small seasonal museums and a provincial park nearby, and it works best as a quiet overnight between Gander and Twillingate rather than a place to spend a week.

Getting around

The town is small and the Main Street strip is walkable. A car is the practical way to reach the provincial park, Gander and Twillingate. Local taxis cover short hops; the DRL-LR intercity bus stops in Lewisporte on its Port aux Basques–St. John's run.

A quiet, low-crime small town; the real risks are weather, wildlife on the roads and seasonal closures, not crime.
  • Seasonal sites (heritage centre, train park, campground) open roughly mid-June to end of August; check dates before you build a day around them.
  • Cell coverage and fuel stops thin out on the small roads off the Trans-Canada Highway; fill up in Gander or Grand Falls-Windsor.
  • Moose and, in coastal areas, the occasional black bear are on or near roads at dusk and dawn.
  • Summer fog and rain arrive fast on Notre Dame Bay; bring a windproof layer for the marina and boat trips.
