Getting around

The centre is walkable. Local buses (Linkkari) run on a zone system: Zone A covers the centre, Santa Claus Village and the airport; a single adult ticket is €3.50 and a 24-hour ticket €4.50. Line 8 links the railway station, centre and Santa Claus Village. Line 11 serves the airport but runs less frequently than the Santa Claus Bus shuttle. Buses are sparse at weekends and in summer, and there are no night lines. Taxis are expensive; use a known call centre or app rather than unmarked cars.

Rovaniemi is a safe, small city; the real risks are extreme cold, icy pavements and overcharging by 'wild' taxis at the airport. In winter, check the forecast and dress for −20 °C or lower.
  • Winter temperatures can fall below −30 °C: layers, proper boots and gloves are essential.
  • Unmarked "wild" taxis at the airport can charge exorbitant fares; use a trusted call centre or app.
  • Many safaris and Santa Claus Village activities need booking ahead in Dec–Mar.
