Hillerød is North Zealand's rail hub and the home of Frederiksborg Castle, a Renaissance castle on its own lake island. The town itself is small and walkable, so most travellers come for the castle and the Baroque garden, then either return to Copenhagen or push on to Fredensborg, Elsinore or the beaches by local train.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: station to castle about 15 min down Vibekevej. Local buses 301/302 run to the castle but go in opposite directions from the station, so ask the driver. A small ferry crosses between the castle and the main square for DKK 25.

Watch out

Safety

Hillerød is a low-risk town; the real issues are winter ice on pavements, bike traffic near the station and the last train back to Copenhagen, which leaves before midnight.
  • Castle hours shorten in winter (about 11:00–15:00); last entry is earlier than closing.
  • Some castle-area restaurants and the town museum close out of season: check before you travel.
  • Buses 301 and 302 leave the station in opposite directions; confirm the castle-bound one.
  • Local trains to Hundested, Tisvildeleje and Gilleleje are infrequent, roughly hourly or less: check the timetable.
