- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
- Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
- Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.
Stanstead is a small Eastern Townships municipality of three villages — Stanstead, Rock Island and Beebe Plain — sitting directly on the Quebec–Vermont line. The border runs through a street, a former factory and the Haskell Free Library and Opera House, where the audience sits in the US and the stage in Canada. Sights are few and close together; most travellers see it in half a day and base in Magog or Sherbrooke.

Arrive & move
Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in
Getting around
No public transit. A car is the practical option; the villages are 2–4 km apart. The rail trail links Ayer's Cliff to Beebe for bikes and walkers. The one legal way to move between Canada and the US without a staffed crossing post is inside the Haskell Free Library and Opera House, which straddles the line — you may cross the floor line there, but you must exit by the door you entered from.

Watch out
Safety
- Crossing the border anywhere except a staffed crossing post is illegal, even on Canusa Street or between houses; carry your passport and report to agents. The only exception is inside the Haskell Free Library and Opera House, where you may move across the floor line but must leave by the door you entered.
- Museums close in winter; check dates before a cold-season trip.
- Cell coverage flips between Canadian and US networks near the line; watch roaming charges.

Coming as the guide grows
- Airport-to-bed contract for YUL and YQB: drive times, last sensible arrival, inn check-in window.
- Four walking clusters with anchors: Rock Island border block, Stanstead village, Beebe Plain, the rail trail.
- Place pages with verified hours (Haskell library, Colby-Curtis, Granit Central) and eat pages with last orders.
- Border-crossing fixture so the Derby Line post can go green.
