Bocas Town sits on the southern tip of Isla Colón in a Caribbean archipelago of nine main islands. It is the most developed town in Panama's Caribbean west: overwater bars, hostels and restaurants on stilts, with beaches, reefs and other islands a short boat ride away. Three to four nights covers the town, one beach day and one island or dive day; the trade-off is rain, which falls in every month.

Getting around

Bocas Town is small enough to walk end to end. Taxis around town cost about $0.60. Water taxis are the only way to the other islands and far beaches; fares are per person, start at about $1, and you should agree the price before boarding. Bicycles rent for about $2/hour or $6–10/day; scooters about $70/day. Two bus companies run from town to Boca del Drago hourly for $3.50, with a lower fare if you get off earlier.

Watch out

Safety

Bocas Town is busy and generally safe by day; the real risks are boat rides in rain, strong currents at some beaches, and late-night drinking. Keep valuables off the beach and use the hotel safe.
  • Rain falls in every month; December and July–August are the wettest. Pack a dry bag for boat rides.
  • Water-taxi fares are per person and negotiable in practice — agree the price before you get in.
  • At Almirante, ignore people offering to walk you to the dock; it inflates the boat ticket price.
  • The Costa Rica border at Sixaola closes at 17:00; officials often ask for printed proof of onward travel.
  • Swimming at Playa Bluff can be difficult because of currents.
