Whitewood is a town of about 860 people at the junction of Highway 1 (Trans-Canada) and Highway 9, 175 km east of Regina and 190 km west of Brandon. It is a rest stop, not a destination: four downtown murals, a 40-building museum village, a small historical museum and a handful of places to eat and sleep. Plan a short break, or one night if you are splitting the Regina–Winnipeg drive.

Getting around

You need a car. The town is small enough to walk between the downtown murals, the historical museum and the cafés, but the museum village and the motels sit on the highway service roads, 1–2 km from the centre. There is no local transit.

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are highway driving, winter storms and long distances between services. Fuel up, carry water in summer and check road conditions in winter.
  • The Regina–Winnipeg stretch has long gaps between services: fuel up in Whitewood before heading east or west.
  • Winter driving on Highway 1 can close in blowing snow; check the provincial highway conditions before you set out.
  • Several sights are seasonal (roughly May to September): out of season, expect the museum village and historical museum to be shut.
  • Rider Express serves Whitewood on a once-weekly overnight run between Winnipeg and Regina: check the current timetable before you plan around it.
