Diffa

Skip unless you have a specific reason (aid work, research, or the Lake Chad circuit). Diffa is a 1-hour stop on the way to N'guigmi or the Nigerian border.

Diffa is a market town on the Komadougou Yobe river, known for its red peppers and as the eastern terminus of Niger's paved RN1. The Grand Marché and the Great Mosque are the main sights. Most travellers pass through in under an hour en route to Zinder, N'guigmi or the Nigerian border at Duji. Security conditions are volatile; check your government's travel advice before planning a visit.

  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • West Africa ↗Carry an original yellow fever vaccination certificate on any West African trip: several countries on the coast road demand it of every arrival, and the rest demand it after you have passed through a neighbour.
  • West Africa ↗Cross land borders and drive between cities in daylight only; plan each crossing as a full travel day with cash for fees and passport copies for checkpoints.
  • Niger ↗Check your own government travel advice for Niger before any booking; advice depends on your passport and changes without notice.

Getting around

The town is walkable; the Grand Marché area is the hub. For longer distances, shared taxis and bush taxis run along RN1. A private vehicle is more reliable.

Watch out

Safety

Diffa is in a region with active security risks from non-state armed groups and banditry. Travel is not recommended by many governments. If you go, travel with a convoy, register with your embassy, and avoid night travel. Carry a satellite phone.
  • Security situation is fluid; check your embassy's latest advice before travelling.
  • No scheduled flights; the airport is closed to commercial traffic.
  • Road between Zinder and Diffa is only partially paved – allow extra time.
  • Carry enough cash (XOF); there are no ATMs that accept foreign cards reliably.
