Portsmouth is a rural, suburban town on Aquidneck Island, north of Middletown and Newport, settled in 1638 and now home to about 17,000 people. Sights sit along two long commercial roads, East Main and West Main, with almost nothing within walking distance of anything else. It works as a quiet, cheaper bed for Newport, or as a half-day of gardens, vineyards and a calm bay beach.

Getting around
A car is close to essential: sights are 5–15 min apart by road and RIPTA buses run mainly along the main roads with long waits. Drive RI 138 or RI 114; to dodge the West Main Road strip, cut onto Access Road, then Defense Road, then Stringham Road. Bicycles work on the back roads but the main roads have fast traffic and narrow shoulders.

- Sidewalks are patchy on East and West Main Road; walk facing traffic on the shoulder.
- Sandy Point Beach charges an entry fee in season and has limited parking — arrive before mid-morning in July–August.
- Vineyard and garden hours are seasonal and change; confirm before driving out.
- Summer weekend traffic on RI 138 and the Newport bridges backs up badly on Sunday afternoons.
