Chico, CaliforniaChico

Give Chico one full day and two nights: Bidwell Park in the morning, downtown and the Sierra Nevada taproom after. Skip it as a base unless you are visiting family or CSU Chico.

Chico is the largest city in California north of Sacramento and the cultural centre of the northern Sacramento Valley, built around California State University, Chico and Bidwell Park, one of the largest municipal parks in the country. It is a college town with a compact, walkable downtown, a landmark brewery and a slow, hot valley summer. Most travellers pass through on the Coast Starlight or stop on the way to Lassen Volcanic National Park; one full day covers the city, and the park is the reason to stay longer.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

Bike: Chico is flat and bike-friendly, and locals and students ride everywhere. B-Line buses cover most of the city roughly hourly. Taxis are cheap but must be called to your location; rideshare also works. A car helps for the airport, Lassen and Oroville.

Door-to-door, not ride time

Oroville, California

go

Door to door: About 30–40 min by car

SR 99 / SR 70 east by car, or Greyhound toward Oroville

Gold Rush-era town with a historic downtown and the Oroville Dam area; a half day is enough.

Sacramento

go

Door to door: About 1 h 45 min by car; train similar

Amtrak Coast Starlight south, or I-5 / SR 99 by car

State capital with Old Sacramento and the railroad museum; better as an overnight than a return day.

Lassen Volcanic National Park

overnight

Door to door: About 1.5 h to the park entrance

SR 32 east then SR 89; car only

Volcanic peaks, hydrothermal areas and hiking; the main road is seasonal — check opening dates before you go.

Redding

caution

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min by car

I-5 north by car, or Amtrak Coast Starlight

Useful as a rail or road stop toward Shasta, not a sight in itself.

Downtown Chico

Walk to Broadway restaurants, bars and the yo-yo museum; Hotel Diamond is the splurge here.

Esplanade / Bidwell Mansion

Quiet tree-lined street between downtown and the park; 10–15 min walk to Broadway.

Manzanita Court (SR 99 north)

Motel strip by the highway; free parking, 5–10 min drive to downtown.

Carmichael Drive (south)

Chain hotels near the mall and SR 99; best if you arrive by car and leave early.

Watch out

Safety

Chico is a normal US college town: daytime downtown and the park are fine, but keep to lit streets after midnight and expect a loud, crowded bar district on weekend nights. The bigger risks are summer heat, wildfire smoke and the once-daily train.
  • Summer heat: July and August afternoons regularly pass 35 °C (95 °F) — do the park early and carry water.
  • Downtown bar district gets loud and crowded on CSU Chico weekend nights; watch your drink and your phone.
  • Wildfire season (roughly Jun–Oct) can bring smoke and poor air quality to the valley: check air quality before outdoor plans.
  • The Coast Starlight calls once daily in each direction — a missed train means a bus or a night in town.
