El Calafate is the gateway town for the Perito Moreno Glacier, 80 km west on Lago Argentino. Almost everyone comes for that one day, then leaves for El Chaltén or Puerto Natales. The town itself is small, walkable along Avenida Libertador, and expensive because everything arrives by truck. Two nights is the standard shape: arrive, glacier day, leave.

Getting around
The town is walkable end to end in about 30 minutes along Avenida Libertador. For the glacier you need a bus, a remise/taxi or a rental car — there is no public transport to the park. Hertz and Avis have offices on the main road. Book your onward bus when you arrive: seats to El Chaltén and Puerto Natales sell out in high season.

Watch out
Safety
- Book glacier buses and onward buses on arrival — high-season seats sell out.
- Airport ATMs are often empty; use the machines on Avenida Libertador and carry cash.
- Food in the park is limited and the on-site restaurant is expensive: bring a picnic and a flask.
- Wind is constant and strong; a shell beats an umbrella.
- If you drive to Chile, the rental company must issue cross-border paperwork and insurance in advance.
- Summer nights can still drop near freezing.
