Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Germany ↗Germany is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Germany ↗Nazi symbols and gestures are criminal offences, including as jokes or souvenirs.
  • Germany ↗Many city centres are low-emission zones: a car needs the right sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter.

Cottbus is Brandenburg's second city, a compact old town on the Spree with a Sorbian/Wendish minority culture, an art-nouveau theatre and Pückler's Branitz landscape park. It is a rail stop between Berlin and Dresden, 1.5 h from Berlin by train, and the gateway to the Spreewald and the new Cottbuser Ostsee. Two nights covers the city and one day trip; most travellers pass through in a day.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Altmarkt / old town

Walk to Oberkirche, Spremberger Turm, the market and most restaurants; best for a short stay.

Near the station (Bahnhofstraße)

Cheapest beds and direct trams into the centre; 10–15 min walk to the Altmarkt.

Branitz / south

Quiet, close to Branitz Park and the zoo; needs a tram or bike for the centre.

Watch out

Safety

Cottbus is a calm, low-crime city; the real risks are winter ice on riverside paths, dark unlit stretches along the Spree after nightfall, and the station area late at night — stick to lit streets and trams.
  • Cottbuser Ostsee is still a landscape construction site: swimming and boating are prohibited as of 2026 — check before you plan a beach day.
  • Many museums close on Monday; the Dieselkraftwerk art museum is closed Monday and free on the first Monday of the month.
  • Shops close on Sundays; the Saturday market on Oberkirchplatz runs 07:00 to about midday.
  • Some churches and the Apothekenmuseum are guided-tour only — check times before you go.

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for BER: last regional departures field-checked, taxi fallback, overnight rung.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: Altmarkt, Schlossberg and Spreeufer, Branitz Park and zoo, station district.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (Oberkirche spire, Schloss Branitz, Dieselkraftwerk, Wendisches Museum) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Lake and Spreewald fixtures so gates A–D can go green once Ostsee access rules change.
