Hagerstown is the seat of Washington County and the largest city in western Maryland, sitting where I-70 meets I-81 about 75 minutes from Washington, Baltimore and Harrisburg. It is a car town: the sights are spread along US 40 and the interstates, and the main draws are Antietam battlefield, the outlet mall and the museums downtown. Most travellers use it as a single overnight stop, not a base.

Getting around

A car is close to essential: only downtown is walkable, and the battlefield, the outlet mall and the speedway are all outside the centre. County Commuter buses cover the city and county, and taxis can be called or hailed downtown. I-70 and I-81 intersect southwest of the city, with US 40 and US 11 crossing in the centre.

Hagerstown is a normal small American city: the main risks are driving on I-70/I-81 and walking quiet downtown blocks after dark. Park in lit lots, keep valuables out of sight, and call 911 for anything urgent.
  • Distances between sights are car distances, not walk distances — do not plan a walking day between downtown, the mall and the battlefield.
  • Summer is hot and humid; winter brings ice on the roads and the Appalachian ridges.
  • Some downtown blocks are quiet after dark; stick to the lit Arts and Entertainment District blocks.
  • Antietam and the C&O Canal are outdoor sites with limited shade and services — carry water.
