Nombre de Dios is a town of about 5,000 in southeast Durango and the oldest settlement in northern Mexico, founded in 1562 on the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro. It is a Pueblo Mágico with five viceregal-era churches, springs that feed public pools and spas, and small artisanal mezcal distilleries. Sights sit close together in the centre; the waterfalls and spas need a car or taxi. Most travellers see it as a stop between Durango and Zacatecas rather than a destination in itself.
