Tintern is a village of about 850 people on the A466 in the Wye Valley, 6 mi (10 km) north of Chepstow and 10 mi (16 km) south of Monmouth. Its one big sight is the ruined 12th-century Cistercian abbey; everything else is riverbank walking, two long-distance paths and a handful of pubs and cafés. There is no railway station and no Sunday bus, so most visitors come by car or as a day trip from Chepstow.

Getting around

The village is small and built along the A466: walk everywhere. Side lanes are narrow and the main road has no real verge, so roadside parking is a bad idea; use the abbey pay-and-display car park. Bus 69 runs hourly Monday–Saturday between Chepstow (15 min) and Monmouth (30 min); there is no Sunday service. Taxis from Chepstow cost about £15.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime village; the real risks are the narrow A466 with no pavement, fast river water after rain and muddy, slippery paths. Take the usual city precautions in Chepstow and Newport at night.
  • No Sunday bus on route 69: plan Saturday or arrange a taxi.
  • Tidenham Tunnel on the Wye Valley Greenway is a bat roost and opens in daylight hours only, April–October.
  • The A466 through the village is narrow with no pavement in stretches: walk facing traffic.
