Yallingup

Give Yallingup 2 nights with a car: surf beach, Ngilgi Cave and Injidup spa in one day, then Caves Road south to Margaret River.

Yallingup is a small beach town of about 1,000 people on the Cape Naturaliste coast, 30 min north of Margaret River and 40 min west of Busselton. It is a surf-and-caves stop, not a town with a centre: the beach, the cave and the bakery sit on one hill, and everything else needs a car. Two nights covers it; one night works if you are driving Caves Road and only want the beach.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around

A car is the practical answer: the beach, the cave, Injidup and the wineries are 5–15 min apart and the hills are steep. TransWA SW1 coaches stop in Yallingup from East Perth (via Bunbury) on Sunday–Thursday and Friday, with no Saturday service; check current timetables. Without a car you are limited to the beach, Caves House and the bakery, plus tours from Dunsborough or Margaret River.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a small beach town; the real risks are the surf and reef at Yallingup Beach, slippery rocks at Injidup, unsealed roads at dusk (kangaroos) and summer bushfire warnings. Emergency number 000.
  • No Saturday TransWA coach service; check the current timetable before you plan a weekend arrival.
  • The walk from the beach up to Ngilgi Cave is steep; drive or take the bush track from Caves House instead.
  • Injidup Natural Spa is a rough walk from the car park over rocks; wear shoes with grip and check the swell before you get in.
  • Surf at Yallingup Beach has a reef break and strong currents; swim between the flags and check conditions.
  • Summer bushfire risk in the South West: check emergency warnings before driving Caves Road.
  • Most wineries and restaurants close by 17:00 and many shut one or two weekdays; book dinner and check hours.
