Ithaca is a small college city at the south end of Cayuga Lake, built around Cornell University and a ring of gorge parks with waterfalls. The sights sit 5–15 minutes apart by car, so a car or the TCAT bus decides your day. Two nights covers the waterfalls, the campus and the Commons without rushing; three if you add a lake day or a winery loop.

Getting around

TCAT buses run frequently and late between downtown, Cornell and Ithaca College; Route 10 links the Seneca/Tioga garage to campus every 10 min on weekday days. Taxis exist but waits of an hour happen on cold or busy nights. Uber and Lyft cover the city. A car helps for the state parks and lake; downtown and Collegetown parking is metered, and the three downtown garages are free evenings and weekends.

Watch out

Safety

Ithaca is a low-crime college city; the real risks are icy gorge trails in winter, unlit rim paths at dusk, and deer on the rural roads at night. Standard US city care around the Commons bars after midnight.
  • Gorge trails close in winter and early spring for ice — Cascadilla Creek Gorge typically shuts from early winter to mid-spring; check park status before you go.
  • Swimming in the gorge parks is only allowed when lifeguards are on duty; the season is short.
  • Parking on Cornell campus is hard on weekdays: buy a visitor permit or park downtown and ride Route 10.
  • Alternate-side street parking rules apply 1 Nov–1 Apr in parts of the city; no parking 02:00–06:00 on the posted side.
  • Winter is colder and snowier than New York City; the first snow can arrive around Halloween.
