Gatineau

Base in Hull for 2 nights: walk to the Canadian Museum of History and cross into Ottawa on foot; add a half-day for Gatineau Park by car.

Gatineau is the Quebec half of Canada's National Capital Region, sitting directly across the Ottawa River from Parliament Hill. Its Hull sector holds the Canadian Museum of History and the waterfront; the rest of the city spreads north and east toward Gatineau Park, Aylmer and Buckingham. Most visitors treat it as a quieter, cheaper bed base for Ottawa, or as the gateway to Gatineau Park and the Outaouais countryside.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Getting around

STO buses cover the city and cross into Ottawa; the Rapibus is the rapid line. OC Transpo routes 15 and 85 link Ottawa's O-Train stations to Hull. A car is the practical choice for Gatineau Park, Aylmer and the countryside; taxis and Uber fill the gaps after bus hours.

Hull (downtown)

Closest to Ottawa and the museum; walkable to the Portage Bridge and ByWard Market. Best for a short stay without a car.

Aylmer

Quieter west-side suburb with a small main street; 15–20 min by car to Hull. Good for longer stays with parking.

Gatineau (sector) and Lac-Beauchamp

East of the Gatineau River; handy for Gatineau Park's southern trails and the casino area. Car useful.

Watch out

Safety

Gatineau is generally safe; the main issues are winter ice, late-night bar crowds on Promenade du Portage and unlit park trails after dark.
  • Promenade du Portage has late-night bars and can be rowdy on weekends.
  • Check Gatineau Park access and closures before setting out; routes and facilities vary by season.
  • Winter ice can slow walks between sectors.
  • Some Hull streets are one-way; check parking availability near the museum.
