Huaraz is the gateway to the Cordillera Blanca and Huascarán National Park, at 3,100 m and about 8 hours by bus from Lima. People come for glacier lakes and multi-day treks, not for the town itself. Give it 3–4 nights: one to acclimatise, two to three for day hikes or a trek. May to September is the dry season and the best window.

Getting around
The centre is walkable; taxis are cheap and fast for short hops. Combis and colectivos leave from the central market area for Caraz, Carhuaz, Yungay, Wilcahuaín and Monterrey. For trailheads in Huascarán National Park you need a tour or a hired vehicle.

Safety
- Altitude: Huaraz sits at 3,100 m. Sleep one night low, drink water, and do not start a hard hike on day one.
- Trailheads and lakes in Huascarán National Park need an entry ticket and, for some, a registered guide: check at the park office or Casa de Guías.
- Bus terminals attract touts ('captadores') who push hostels for commission and bad-mouth others: walk past and go to the address you booked.
- Rare but reported robberies on the Rataquena mirador trail and in some taxis: don't carry valuables, avoid unmarked cabs, and don't walk alone at night.
- Rainy season (Dec–Mar) closes or muddies high trails; some passes and roads are affected.
