Saturna is the smallest and quietest of the Southern Gulf Islands: about 31 km², roughly 335 residents, and nearly half of it inside Gulf Islands National Park Reserve. There is one general store, a pub, a handful of B&Bs and cottages, and no bank. You come here to walk, watch birds and whales, and do very little else. One or two nights is enough; the ferry schedule, not the sight list, sets your plan.

Getting around

No public bus service. Bring a car on the ferry, or book a taxi or arrange a lift with your accommodation; the island is about 20 km end to end. Cycling works for fit riders — the roads are hilly and shoulders are narrow. Kayak launches at Thomson Park and Winter Cove.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are cold water, cliff edges, unmarked road shoulders and a ferry you miss. Tell someone your trail plan — phone coverage is thin.
  • Ferry sailings are few and change by season and day; some routes need a transfer. Reserve a car space ahead in summer.
  • No bank and no cash machine except at the pub; most places take cards but confirm with your host.
  • Fresh water is scarce — conserve it.
  • Open fires are banned in summer when the hazard is extreme; permits at other times come from the general store.
  • Cell coverage is patchy away from the harbour; download maps and ferry times before you sail.
