Santiago is a small coastal town on the Manila North Road between Candon and San Esteban, with a horseshoe bay, a cream-sand beach and a Spanish-era watchtower declared a National Cultural Treasure. The beach strip sits at Sabangan on the coast while the town proper, church and market are inland, so you move by tricycle. Most travellers pass through on the Ilocos route; one night is enough unless you are using it as a slow beach base.

Tricycles are the main transport and the only practical way between the inland town proper and the Sabangan beach strip. Buses on Route 2 (Manila North Road) stop along the highway. There is no taxi or ride-hailing coverage worth relying on — agree the tricycle fare before you get in.

Safety
- The beach strip and the town proper are a few kilometres apart: plan tricycle hops, not walks.
- Typhoon season runs roughly Jun–Nov; check forecasts and ferry or bus cancellations before committing.
- Some cove and beach areas charge an entrance or parking fee — ask before you settle in.
- Cash is the norm in town; ATMs are limited and may be empty, so bring pesos from Candon or Vigan.
- Swim with care: currents at the cove and near Mapisi Rock can be strong, and there is no full-time lifeguard cover.
