Adams is a small mill town in the northern Berkshires whose real draw is the mountain above it: Mount Greylock, at 3,491 ft (1,064 m) the highest point in Massachusetts, with the Appalachian Trail crossing the summit. The town itself is a short downtown, a rail trail and two small historic houses. Most travellers use Adams as a one- or two-night hiking base and drive in from Pittsfield or North Adams.

Getting around

A car is close to essential: Route 8 traffic moves fast and the mountain road is a drive, not a walk. The Ashuwillticook Rail Trail is paved and flat for walking and cycling between Adams, Cheshire and Lanesborough. Berkshire Outfitters on Grove Street rents bicycles (about $25/3 h, $35/day).

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are mountain weather, unmarked trail junctions and fast traffic on Route 8. Tell someone your route before hiking and carry a layer.
  • The Mount Greylock summit road (Rockwell Road from Lanesborough, Notch Road from North Adams) closes in winter and reopens around late May — check before driving up.
  • Bascom Lodge and the Veterans War Memorial Tower close for the season around Columbus Day.
  • Weather at the summit is far colder and windier than in town; carry a jacket even in July.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on the mountain; do not rely on GPS for the summit roads.
  • Route 8 has no useful sidewalk outside downtown — drive or ride, do not walk it.
