Kongsberg is a former silver-mining town in Buskerud, about 1 h 15 min by car or 1 h 20 min by train from Oslo. Its mine works, 8 km west at Saggrenda, are the main sight and the underground train into the tunnels runs 18 May–31 Aug only. The town itself is compact and walkable, with Norway's largest church by seating and a mining museum on the main square. Most travellers see it as a half-day or one-night stop on the way to Numedal, Rjukan or the Hardangervidda.

Getting around

The centre is compact and walkable; the station sits just north of it. Local buses and the ski bus serve the edges, and taxis run by app. For the mines at Saggrenda, 8 km west, take a car, taxi or check the local bus timetable — walking is not realistic.

Safety

Kongsberg is a small, low-risk town; the real hazards are winter ice on pavements, dark unlit paths along the river and cold-weather exposure if you head into the hills unprepared.
  • The underground mine train runs 18 May–31 Aug only; outside those dates you get the surface museum, not the tunnels.
  • Mine tickets are dated and the underground route can sell out in July — book ahead on the museum site.
  • Museum opening hours switch to a short winter schedule (roughly Tue–Fri 12:00–15:00, Sat–Sun 12:00–16:00): check before you travel.
  • Norway is card-first; a few kroner in cash is enough for a day.
  • Summer weekends on the Oslo line fill up — reserve a seat.
