Two neighbouring villages 9 km apart on the southeast coast of Graham Island, and the practical hub of Haida Gwaii: the BC Ferries terminal at Skidegate Landing, the Haida Heritage Centre, motels, a hospital and the harbour that Gwaii Haanas charters leave from. Most trips run 2–3 nights, longer if you add a multi-day Gwaii Haanas tour. Book beds and ferries months ahead for June–September.

Safety

A small, quiet community and generally safe for visitors. The real risks are weather, cold water, remote trails and wildlife: tell someone your plan, carry rain gear and don't rely on phone signal.
  • Everything is seasonal: many restaurants, galleries and lodges run reduced hours or close from October to May — check before you build a day around one.
  • Gwaii Haanas is reached by boat or floatplane only, with a mandatory orientation and a limited daily number of visitors: book a licensed operator well ahead.
  • Ferries and flights fill in summer and cancel in wind; keep a buffer night before an onward flight.
  • Cell and data coverage is patchy outside the villages; download offline maps.
  • Weather turns fast on the water and on trails: rain shell, layers and sturdy shoes.
