Formosa is a Goiás town of about 100,000 on the BR-020, 100 km from Brasília, and it is the gateway to the Itiquira falls and the Bisnau caves and rock-art sites east of town. The town itself is a service stop: markets, a grid of streets, a handful of restaurants. Everything you come for sits 20–100 km out on dirt and asphalt roads, so a vehicle decides the trip. In the rainy season (Nov–Mar) the access roads to the caves and the district of Bezerra turn bad and some routes close.

Getting around

A car is the practical answer: the falls, caves and Bezerra district are 20–100 km out with no useful bus service. Hire in Brasília (about 1.5 h each way) or locally. In town the centre is walkable. Guided 4x4 or van tours from Formosa and Brasília cover the caves and canyoning; ask your hotel to book one, since some sites sit on private land and need a local guide.

Drive the GO-440, signposted from Formosa, about 32 miles (50 km)

168 m fall in Itiquira Municipal Park; entry roughly R$12 adults, R$6 children 5–10, under 5 free (check). No swimming in the plunge pool; smaller pools downstream are swimmable.

Bisnau district (waterfalls, caves, rock art)

Watch out

Safety

Formosa is a small, calm interior town; the real risks are the roads and the outdoors. Do not drive dirt roads at night, do not swim in the plunge pool under the falls, and use a licensed guide for caves and rappels.
  • Dirt and gravel roads to the caves and Bezerra become impassable after heavy rain: ask locally before setting out in the wet season.
  • Some caves, sinkholes and rock-art sites are on private farms and need permission or a guide; do not enter unaccompanied.
  • The Buraco das Araras descent and the Bisnau rappel are technical: go with a licensed operator and your own light.
  • Long stretches out of town have no fuel, water or phone signal: fill the tank and carry water.
  • Sun and heat are strong year-round at altitude; start early.
