Knaresborough is a small North Yorkshire market town on the River Nidd, 4 miles east of Harrogate and 17 miles west of York. The whole centre is walkable in half a day: a ruined castle, a railway viaduct over a gorge, a riverside walk and a cliff chapel. Most travellers see it as a day trip from Harrogate or York; one night buys you the gorge and viaduct without crowds. It is a commuter town for Leeds and York, so it is quiet on weekdays and busy on summer weekends.

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk end to end in about 20 minutes (check). Bus 1 links Harrogate, Knaresborough and St James Retail Park every 10 minutes or so. Trains run every 30 minutes on the Leeds–Harrogate–Knaresborough–York loop. Taxis: Knaresborough Cars, +44 1423 900446.

Watch out

Safety

One of the safer small towns in England; the real risks are steep, wet riverside steps, uneven castle ruins and dark unlit paths along the gorge after dusk. Standard UK advice applies: 999 or 112 in an emergency, 101 for non-urgent police.
  • The riverside path to Mother Shipton's Cave and St Robert's Cave is steep and can be muddy; wear shoes with grip.
  • Mother Shipton's Cave runs Apr–Oct daily, Nov–Mar weekends only; last entry is before the posted close, so check the official site.
  • Chapel of Our Lady of the Crag opens April–September, Sunday afternoons only.
  • The Bed Race closes roads through town on the second Saturday in June; check dates before you drive in.
  • The station has no toilets; use the town centre before you travel.
