Viedma is the capital of Río Negro and one of Patagonia's oldest towns, founded in 1779 on the north bank of the Río Negro. It is quiet, flat and walkable, with a riverfront of beaches and restaurants and the old town of Carmen de Patagones across the water. Most travellers pass through on the bus or train between Buenos Aires, Bariloche and the Atlantic coast; the reason to stop is the river, the ferry and the beaches at El Cóndor.

Getting around

The centre is flat and small enough to walk: Plaza Alsina to the riverfront is about 10 minutes. Local buses use the SUBE card (same as Buenos Aires) or the Viedma Bus card; buses to El Cóndor and La Lobería leave from Zatti street east of Álvaro Barros and take cash, while buses to Carmen de Patagones leave from Sarmiento street and take cards only. Taxi ranks sit at Plaza Alsina and the bus terminal. Bicycles work well on the wide, flat streets, but there is no public rental (check private options).

Watch out

Safety

Viedma is calm and walkable by day; the usual cautions are the plain bus-terminal area after dark, cash-only local buses and the wind on the coast. Use 911 for police.
  • The Patagones ferry is small and cheap but stops in low tide or strong wind: the operator posts suspensions online, so check before you walk down.
  • The bus terminal sits in a plain neighbourhood 2 km south-west of the centre: take a taxi after dark rather than walk.
  • Summer afternoons on the central El Cóndor beach are windy; the southern beaches are more sheltered.
  • Bring cash for local buses to the coast and for small beach services; not every card works outside the centre.
