Casper is Wyoming's second city and the practical hub of Central Wyoming: a North Platte crossing where the Oregon, California, Mormon and Pony Express trails once ran. The town itself fills a day — the National Historic Trails Interpretive Center, Fort Caspar and a small downtown — while the real draws sit within a 100 km drive. Most travellers use it as a bed and supply stop between Cheyenne and Yellowstone or the Black Hills.

Getting around

Casper is a driving town: I-25, US 20/26 and WY 220 meet here, and most sights need a car. Casper Area Transit runs a limited bus network (about $1 adult, $0.75 student, $0.50 senior/disabled, under-5 free — check current fares). Taxis are scarce; call ahead and expect a 20–30 min wait if you ring on arrival. Bars fund a free Tipsy Taxi ride home.

Safety

Casper is a small city with ordinary precautions: lock the car, keep to lit streets downtown at night, and watch for ice and wind in winter. The bigger risk is the drive — long empty highways, wildlife at dusk and fast weather changes.
  • Distances are long: fuel up before heading to Independence Rock or South Pass.
  • Winter brings snow, ice and wind chill; mountain roads can close.
  • Summer afternoons storm quickly — carry water and a layer.
