Dalkeith is a Midlothian commuter town six miles southeast of Edinburgh, and it is not a sightseeing destination. The draw is Dalkeith Country Park and the National Mining Museum at Newtongrange, plus cheaper beds than central Edinburgh. Buses into the city run often and take about 40 minutes, so most travellers use it as a budget base or a half-day out.

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk. Buses south from Edinburgh run through town to Newtongrange and Gorebridge for the Mining Museum; Bus 140 goes west to Roslin for Rosslyn Chapel. Eskbank station is a mile southwest and useful for Galashiels and Tweedbank, not for Edinburgh.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet commuter town and generally safe. The real issues are dark, unlit paths in winter, fast traffic on the A7 and A68 approaches, and a thin late-night bus service back from Edinburgh.
  • Sheriffhall roundabout is a known bottleneck at peak times; allow extra time by car.
  • Dalkeith Palace itself is not open to visitors: you can only see it from outside.
  • Some town-centre pubs and the Wetherspoon have closed; check before you walk out for a drink.
  • The country park gates close in the evening: check the current closing time.
