  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Kutztown is a small Berks County town of about 5,000 people, 17 miles northeast of Reading and 18 miles southwest of Allentown, built around Kutztown University and a Pennsylvania German heritage that still shows in its food, festivals and surrounding farmland. There is no train and no scheduled public bus, so a car is the practical way in and the only way to reach the sights outside the centre. One night covers the town; add a second only for the July folk festival or a slow market weekend.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is the practical way to get around: there is no scheduled public transport in Kutztown, and the university shuttle is for students only. The compact centre along Main Street is walkable, with on-street parking and lots just off it. Many side streets are permit parking for residents — read the signs before you leave the car. Crystal Cave and the surrounding farmland need a vehicle.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Main Street (downtown)

Walkable to the cafés, taverns and shops; in-town lodging is limited, with the Vintner's Inn B&B on West Main Street, so book early.

Kutztown Road / US 222 strip

Highway-side hotels with parking, including the Hampton Inn & Suites, 5–10 min drive from Main Street; best if you arrive late or leave early.

Golden Key Road, I-78 exit 45

Budget motels about 15 min north; only worth it if you are passing through on I-78.

Watch out

Safety

Kutztown is a small rural town with a low crime rate and is generally safe. The real nuisance is late-night student crowds on Main Street and near campus on Thursday to Saturday during the fall and spring semesters; watch for icy pavements in winter.
  • No train station and no scheduled public bus: plan on a car or a rideshare from Reading or Allentown.
  • Side-street parking near the university is permit-only for residents; you can be ticketed.
  • Thursday to Saturday nights in the fall and spring semesters bring crowds of students to Main Street and the campus edge.
  • Crystal Cave lists a 1 March–30 November season: check current access and hours before driving out in winter.
  • The folk festival is a nine-day July event: expect full hotels and heavy traffic that week.
