Sitka is a town of about 9,000 on Baranof Island in the Inside Passage, reachable only by air or sea. It was the Russian capital of Alaska until 1867, and the Alaska Day transfer happened on Castle Hill. The historic core is small and flat, so you walk it; the bears, raptors and totem park sit a short ride out. Cruise ships land most summer days, which fills the centre from mid-morning to late afternoon.

Getting around

Downtown is walkable and flat; a free municipal Wi-Fi network covers the centre. The Ride bus runs three lines Monday–Friday, roughly 06:30–18:30, closed on major holidays. A seasonal shuttle loops the main sights on days with heavy cruise arrivals, and taxis, bike rental and sea taxis cover the rest.

Safety

Sitka is a small, low-crime town and safe to walk by day. The real risks are weather, cold water and remote trails: tell someone your plan, carry rain gear, and treat boat and plane trips as weather-dependent.
  • No road in or out: you arrive by plane or ferry, and weather can delay both.
  • Cruise days pack the centre and the totem park from mid-morning to late afternoon.
  • Rain is normal in any month; bring a waterproof shell and shoes with grip.
  • Some sights run summer-only hours and close on federal holidays in winter.
  • Book lodging and any boat trip early for June–August.
