Grants is a small Interstate 40 town in western New Mexico, about 75 mi (120 km) west of Albuquerque and 60 mi (97 km) east of Gallup, sitting on the old Route 66 alignment. Its own sights are thin — a uranium-mining museum and a handful of Route 66 survivors — but it is the practical bed base for El Malpais National Monument, El Morro National Monument, Acoma Pueblo and the lava country south of the highway. Almost everyone arrives by car; there is no useful public transport for visitors and no taxi service.

Getting around

Drive. Grants sprawls more than its population suggests and the motels sit well away from the centre, so a car is the only practical way to reach El Malpais, El Morro, the pueblos or Chaco. A local bus line exists but runs irregularly — call the chamber of commerce for current schedules. There are no taxis in the city. A bike works for the flat in-town strip only.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet Interstate town; the real risks are long empty drives, monsoon storms on the lava and mesa trails, and a few rough Route 66 bars. Carry water and fuel, and do not count on a taxi.
  • No taxi service and irregular local buses: without a car you are stuck on the motel strip.
  • Some Santa Fe Avenue bars are rough; keep to posted, well-lit places.
  • Summer monsoon (Jul–Aug) brings flash floods and lightning on the lava and mesa trails.
  • Early October: the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta fills rooms up to 100 mi away — book ahead.
  • El Malpais and El Morro trails are rough lava and slickrock; carry water, there is little shade.
