Stroud sits where five steep valleys meet in the southern Cotswolds, an old textile town of stone mills and weavers' cottages that never got the heritage polish of its neighbours. It is a working town with a strong organic-food and alternative streak, best known for a Saturday farmers' market that draws people from across Gloucestershire. The town itself fills half a day; the walking in the surrounding valleys fills the rest. Most travellers see it as a day trip from Cheltenham, Gloucester or Cirencester rather than a base, though two nights works if you want the market and a long walk without rushing.

Stroud is a small town and daytime safety is not a concern; the real risks are dark lanes with no footway, muddy descents in the valleys and a thin late-night scene — drinkers often head to Cheltenham instead.
