Give Bergamo one full day and one night: Città Alta on foot in the morning, funicular down, lower city after lunch. Two nights only if you add a lake or Brescia.
Bergamo is two towns stacked on one hill: Città Alta, the walled upper town with Venetian ramparts, and Città Bassa, the flat modern lower city. The upper town is small enough to walk in half a day, and the funicular links the two in about two minutes. Most travellers pass through because Orio al Serio (BGY) is a low-cost airport for Milan, 50 minutes away by train. That is the mistake: the old town is the reason to stop, and one night is enough to see it without rushing.

Getting around
Walk in both towns; the two are linked by the Città Alta funicular (about 2 min) and by ATB bus 1. ATB also runs a second funicular from Città Alta up to San Vigilio and one tram line (T1) that runs northeast to Albino, away from the sights. Buy ATB tickets at machines, the app or contactless on board; a single city ticket covers 75 min and a 24 h card covers the whole network including both funiculars.

Watch out
Safety
- Città Alta is steep and cobbled: wear shoes with grip, not smooth soles.
- The train station is under renovation; some regional lines run as a substitute bus. Check Trenord before you plan a connection.
- Buses to the airport can run late in traffic: allow 30–45 min before you need to be at the terminal.
- Do not get off at the 'Orio al Serio' stop for the airport — it is the village on the far side. Use 'Orio Center'.
- Restaurants in Piazza Vecchia charge for the view; walk two lanes off the square for better value.
