Wetherby is a market town of about 11,700 people on the old Great North Road, 13 miles northeast of Leeds. Its coaching inns, Thursday market and racecourse are the draw; the town centre is a busy through-road, and you need wheels to reach the surrounding houses and parks. Most travellers pass through on the A1(M) rather than sleep here.

A low-crime market town; the real risks are the busy main road through the centre, muddy or flooded riverside paths, and late-night walks back from the A1(M) services where there is no pavement lighting.
  • The main street is a busy through-road: use the crossings, not the gaps between cars.
  • Wetherby has no railway station; Harrogate or Leeds plus a bus is the normal rail route, and Leeds rail and bus stations are a mile apart.
  • Bramham Park house visits are by appointment and need a group of ten; check before planning around it.
  • Leeds Festival at Bramham Park in the August holiday weekend brings road closures and one-way systems.
  • Riverside paths along the Wharfe are muddy and can flood after winter rain.
