Punta Arenas is the largest city in Chilean Patagonia and the regional capital of Magallanes, sitting on the Strait of Magellan about 1,400 km from Antarctica. It is a compact, walkable port city of grand 19th-century mansions, a famous cemetery, and a working harbour. Most travellers use it as a staging point for the Magdalena Island penguin colony, Torres del Paine, or an Antarctic expedition. Two nights covers the city and one wildlife trip; one night is enough if you are only transiting.

Getting around
The centre is compact and walkable, but wind is constant and strong. Taxis and colectivos (route taxis) are cheap and easy to flag. A public bus system (Movigas) runs four lines from downtown to the suburbs, not useful within the centre. Rent a car or book a tour for sights outside the city such as the penguin colonies and Río Seco.

Safety
- Weather changes fast: rain, wind and sun can all appear in one day; bring a windproof layer year-round.
- Strong winds can cancel ferry crossings to Magdalena Island and Tierra del Fuego; keep a buffer day.
- Book penguin and Antarctic trips ahead in high season (Dec–Mar); they sell out.
- The city has no central bus station: buy tickets at each company's office.
- There is no road link north through Chile; you must cross into Argentina to reach the rest of the country by land.
