Chico is the largest city in California north of Sacramento and the cultural centre of the northern Sacramento Valley, built around California State University, Chico and Bidwell Park, one of the largest municipal parks in the country. It is a college town with a compact, walkable downtown, a landmark brewery and a slow, hot valley summer. Most travellers pass through on the Coast Starlight or stop on the way to Lassen Volcanic National Park; one full day covers the city, and the park is the reason to stay longer.

Safety

Chico is a normal US college town: daytime downtown and the park are fine, but keep to lit streets after midnight and expect a loud, crowded bar district on weekend nights. The bigger risks are summer heat, wildfire smoke and the once-daily train.
  • Summer heat: July and August afternoons regularly pass 35 °C (95 °F) — do the park early and carry water.
  • Downtown bar district gets loud and crowded on CSU Chico weekend nights; watch your drink and your phone.
  • Wildfire season (roughly Jun–Oct) can bring smoke and poor air quality to the valley: check air quality before outdoor plans.
  • The Coast Starlight calls once daily in each direction — a missed train means a bus or a night in town.
