Newcastle is a small seaside town in County Down, population about 8,300, sitting where the Mourne Mountains meet a 3-mile beach. It is the practical base for the Mournes and Murlough Nature Reserve, and home to Royal County Down golf club. Two nights covers the town and one hill day; most people arrive by bus from Belfast in about 80 minutes.

Getting around

The town is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes. You need wheels for Murlough, Castlewellan, Annalong and the Mourne trailheads: buses are sparse, so use a taxi or drive. National Cycleway 99 runs on-road through town from Downpatrick and Bangor.

Safety

Very safe for a small resort town. The real risks are mountain weather, tide cut-offs on the beach and unlit roads out of town at night: carry a torch and a waterproof.
  • Fine summer weekends jam the A2 and A24 into town; arrive before midday or after 16:00.
  • At high tide the beach narrows to pebbles; check tide times before planning a walk.
  • Mountain weather turns fast: carry a waterproof and tell someone your route.
