Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Huddersfield is a textile town in West Yorkshire with a Grade I-listed railway station, a Victorian tower on an Iron Age hilltop and weavers' cottages in the Colne Valley. It sits 25–35 minutes by train from Leeds and Manchester, so most travellers see it as a day trip rather than a place to stay. One day covers the centre, Castle Hill and one valley museum; two days if you want the Holme Valley and Holmfirth as well.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Walk the ring road and everything inside it: the shopping streets are pedestrianised and parking inside the ring road is scarce. Buses leave the central bus station on Westgate for the valleys and nearby towns, mostly hourly until about 23:00. Taxis rank outside the railway station. Trains from Huddersfield station reach Leeds and Manchester in roughly 25–35 minutes.

Day-trips

Leeds

go

Direct train from Huddersfield station

Big-city museums, markets and nightlife; easy to combine with a Huddersfield day.

Halifax

go

Door to door: About 40–50 min

Direct train, or First bus 503 from the bus station

Piece Hall and the Calder valley; a half-day is enough.

Wakefield

go

Door to door: About 40–50 min

Direct train from Huddersfield station

Sculpture park and cathedral; pair with the Hepworth.

Bradford

caution

Door to door: About 1 h

Train with a change, or bus

Worth it for the media museum and curry houses, but connections are slower.

Pontefract

caution

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

Train with a change at Wakefield

Castle and liquorice history; a long half-day.

Ilkley

caution

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min

Train with a change at Leeds

Moor walks and a spa town; better as its own day from Leeds.

Wetherby

skip

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min

Train to Leeds, then bus

A small market town; not worth the connections from Huddersfield.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Town centre (around the station and Kingsgate)

Best for a one-night stop: walkable to the station, market and bars.

Holmfirth and the Holme Valley

Village base south of town for countryside and the Last of the Summer Wine trail; needs a car or bus.

Golcar and the Colne Valley

Quiet mill-village stays, close to the Colne Valley Museum; buses run from the town centre.

Watch out

Safety

The town centre is covered by CCTV inside the ring road and is fine by day. The real risks are late-night walk-alone routes through Fartown, Bradley, Thornton Lodge and Birkby, and Friday/Saturday bar crowds: take a taxi after dark.
  • Late at night, avoid walking alone through Fartown, Bradley, Thornton Lodge and Birkby; take a taxi or stay in a group.
  • Victoria Tower on Castle Hill opens only at weekends in summer; check before climbing.
  • Some valley museums and pubs keep weekend-only or short hours; check the day you plan to go.
  • Match days at the John Smith's Stadium fill trains and bars; book beds and tickets ahead.
