Ingolstadt

One night is enough: Audi museum, the old town and the fortress in a day, then move on to Munich or Nuremberg by ICE.

Ingolstadt sits on the 300 km/h Nuremberg–Munich line, so it works as a half-day stop or a single night rather than a base. The old town is compact and walkable; the Audi museum and the Danube fortress are the two things worth planning around. Most travellers see it in a day and sleep in Munich or Nuremberg.

  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Germany ↗Germany is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Germany ↗Nazi symbols and gestures are criminal offences, including as jokes or souvenirs.
  • Germany ↗Many city centres are low-emission zones: a car needs the right sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter.

Getting around

The old town is small enough to walk end to end in about 20 minutes. INVG buses cover the rest, roughly every 15–60 min from 05:00 to 21:00, with N-prefixed night lines. Bikes work well on the marked lanes, but lights and signals are enforced. Taxis run about €10–15 across town.

Old town (Altstadt)

Walkable to the churches, museums and the Danube; quiet at night, few large hotels.

Around Ingolstadt Hbf

Best for a one-night rail stop: ICE to Munich or Nuremberg, buses to the centre.

Ingolstadt Nord / Nordbahnhof

Closer to the old town than the main station; regional trains and Flixbus stop here.

Watch out

Safety

Ingolstadt is a low-risk city; the practical issues are bike traffic, cold-weather slips on cobbles and late-night taxi shortages during the beer festivals.
  • Bike fines are real: riding through a red light can cost about €100 (≈ US$120).
  • Some museum captions are German-only; the Army Museum has been under renovation, so check before you go.
  • Friday and Saturday nights around the beer festivals, taxis are hard to get by phone or at ranks.
  • Audi factory tours must be booked well ahead and are not guaranteed on the day.
