Pasadena
Give Pasadena 1–2 nights as a Los Angeles base: the A Line reaches Union Station in 20 min, and Old Pasadena is walkable from the Del Mar and Memorial Park stops.
Pasadena sits at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains, 11 mi (about 18 km) northeast of Downtown Los Angeles, and is the main population centre of the San Gabriel Valley. It is known as the City of Roses for the New Year's Day Rose Parade and Rose Bowl Game, and it holds a compact, walkable core of museums, historic architecture and restaurants. Most visitors use it as a quieter, cheaper base for Los Angeles, or come for the parade and the Norton Simon.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around
The Metro A Line light rail runs through Pasadena with six stops (Fillmore, Del Mar, Memorial Park, Lake, Allen, Sierra Madre Villa) and reaches Union Station in about 20 minutes. Tap a contactless card or phone on Metro trains and buses; fares cap automatically once you hit the daily or weekly limit. Pasadena Transit and Metro buses fill the gaps, and the 180 bus runs to Hollywood in about an hour. Old Pasadena, the Playhouse District and South Lake are walkable; for the mountains or the Rose Bowl you want a car or a rideshare.

Old Pasadena
Best for a first visit: A Line at Del Mar and Memorial Park, walkable to restaurants and shops, busiest on weekends.
Playhouse District and South Lake
Quieter, more hotels and cafés, 10–15 min walk or a short bus ride from Old Pasadena.
Near Caltech and the 210 freeway
Cheaper chain hotels and free parking; you will need a car or the A Line for the centre.
