- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.
Kingston is a commuter town of about 12,600 people between Boston and Plymouth, with a rail station, a mall and one public beach. It has almost no lodging and thin sightseeing, so most travellers sleep in Plymouth or Boston and pass through. Use it for a half-day: Gray's Beach, the Jones River walk, and a train into Boston.

Getting around
A car is the practical choice: Route 3 runs through town and parking is free nearly everywhere. GATRA's Plymouth Area Link buses cover local routes at $1 regular fare, and the MBTA commuter rail reaches Boston in about an hour. The rail station sits roughly a mile from the mall, so plan a taxi or a long walk. Check current GATRA timetables and service days before you rely on a bus.

Day-trips, door to door
Day-trips
Plymouth
goDoor to door: About 20–30 min

The reason most people come to this stretch of coast: waterfront, historic sites and restaurants. Go early in summer.
Boston
goDoor to door: About 1 h 10 min
MBTA Plymouth/Kingston line from Kingston station to South Station
Car-free day trip; check the timetable, as some trains terminate at Plymouth instead.
Halifax
cautionDoor to door: About 20 min
Car north on Route 106, about 15 min
Small inland town; only worth it if you are already driving the back roads.
Scituate
goDoor to door: About 35–45 min
Car north on Route 3A, about 30 min
Better harbour and lighthouse stop than anything in Kingston; pair it with a coastal drive.
Carver
cautionDoor to door: About 25 min
Car west on Route 44, about 20 min
Cranberry country; mostly a driving stop unless you are heading to Edaville.
Braintree
skipDoor to door: About 35 min
Car north on Route 3, about 30 min
Suburban shopping and a transit hub; no reason to detour here.
Middleborough
cautionDoor to door: About 30 min
Car west on Route 44, about 25 min
Useful mainly for the commuter rail connection south.
Bridgewater
skipDoor to door: About 35 min
Car west on Route 106 and Route 104, about 30 min
College town; nothing here beats Plymouth or Scituate.

Where to sleep
Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.
Route 3 / Main Street strip
The main lodging cluster: chain inns off Exit 9, walkable to Main Street diners. Best for one night with a car.
Wapping Road / Jones River area
Inland lanes with a few guesthouses and B&Bs; you need a car for everything. Availability is thin — check before booking.
Kingston Collection area
Mall-side venues and the go-kart and bowling halls; convenient by car, but about a mile from the rail station on foot.
