Noordwijk is a South Holland beach town split in two: Noordwijk aan Zee on the dunes, with the sand, boulevard and beach pavilions, and Noordwijk Binnen inland, the older village with the churches and Voorstraat. It has no train station, so you arrive by bus from Leiden or Voorhout. One night covers the beach and the museums; two nights in summer lets you add the dunes by bike and a day trip. Most travellers use it as a seaside stop between Leiden, Katwijk and the bulb fields rather than a full base.

Getting around

Bike is the best way: the town is flat and the dunes have signed cycle paths. Local buses link the seafront, Noordwijk Binnen and the stations; buy a ticket on board or use an OV card. No train station in town.

Watch out

Safety

A calm, low-crime beach town; the real risks are cold water and currents, fast cyclists on the dune paths, and dark unlit stretches of beach at night.
  • No train station: you arrive by bus from Leiden or Voorhout, so check the last bus if you arrive late.
  • Beach pavilions are dismantled for autumn and winter, so expect fewer places open on the sand outside summer.
  • North Sea swimming is cold and has currents; swim between the flags where lifeguards are on duty (summer only).
  • Summer seafront hotels sell out and prices jump; book ahead in Jul–Aug.
  • Bikes have priority on many roads and paths; look both ways on cycle tracks.
