Managua is Nicaragua's capital and transport hub, and almost every trip passes through it. The 1972 earthquake flattened the historic downtown, so sights are spread out and the city rewards a short, targeted visit rather than a long stay. Most travellers spend one night near the airport or one day in the centre before moving on to Granada, León or the Pacific coast.

Getting around

No Uber. Private taxis are the usual tourist option and fares are negotiated before you get in; collective taxis are cheaper but share the car. City buses are numbered and cheap but crowded and stop early. The city is spread out and not very walkable.

Safety

Managua is not a walking city and petty theft is the main risk. Use private taxis at night, avoid the empty old centre after dark, and keep valuables out of sight in traffic and on buses.
  • Negotiate the taxi fare before you start; there are no fixed rates.
  • Avoid unlicensed 'pirate' taxis — check the plate and licence.
  • Do not walk the old centre or lakefront after dark.
  • During the rainy season, open drainage canals can turn into fast streams.
  • Keep bags in front of you on buses and close car windows in traffic.
