Longyearbyen is the world's northernmost town of its size, on Svalbard, about 2,500 people, and the main gateway to the high Arctic. You come for guided snowmobile, boat, dog-sled and glacier trips, the midnight sun or the polar night, not for a city break. Everything outside the built-up area is polar bear country, so you move with a guide or a rifle. Three to four nights covers the main tours and a day trip to Barentsburg or Pyramiden.

Getting around

No public transport except the airport shuttle. The centre is walkable; taxis cover Nybyen and the airport (a short ride is around 120 NOK). Hotels and operators rent bikes in summer and cars are available but limited and rarely worth it, since tours pick you up at your accommodation.

Safety

Longyearbyen is calm and safe as a town; the real risk is the wilderness. Polar bears can be anywhere outside the settlement at any time of year, so go with a guide or a rented rifle, and check tour conditions before you book.

  • Svalbard is outside the Schengen area; you pass identity and customs checks when returning to mainland Norway, so a Schengen visa must be multiple-entry.
  • Alcohol is duty-free and cheaper than the mainland, but Nordpolet applies quotas and you must show a plane ticket to buy.
  • In winter, snowmobiles use tracks that do not follow the roads; keep clear and wear reflective outer layers.
  • Most tours need booking ahead in high season; walk-up space is limited and weather can cancel trips.
