Half a day for Laura Ingalls Wilder fans, otherwise skip. The town has two homestead sites and a pageant; you can see everything in 3–4 hours.
De Smet, South Dakota, is the 'Little Town on the Prairie' where Laura Ingalls Wilder lived as a girl. The main draws are the Ingalls Homestead and the Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society. Most visitors come between June and August for the pageant and the summer weather. The town has no scheduled air service and limited dining; plan it as a half-day stop on a longer South Dakota road trip.
