Ciudad del Este is Paraguay's second city and its border-trade engine: a dense downtown of malls and arcades selling tax-free imports, 500 m from the Friendship Bridge to Brazil. The city itself is loud, hot and commercial; the reasons to stop are the Itaipú dam, the Monday falls, the tri-border viewpoint and the Iguazú Falls, which are 1.5–2 h door to door on the Brazilian or Argentine side. Most travellers use it as a one-night crossing point, not a destination.

Getting around

City buses charge about ₲4,000–5,000; board, sit down and pay the driver's assistant when they come round, and keep the ticket or change as proof of payment. Taxis are unmetered — agree the fare before you get in, and pay with near-exact change. Motorcycle taxis are common near the bridge and fast through the traffic; the driver should give you a helmet. The centre, the terminal and the bridge are all walkable in under 30 minutes.

Watch out

Safety

Downtown is a busy trade zone, not a dangerous one, but keep bags zipped, carry only the cash you need, and never skip a border stamp — that is where the real trouble starts.
  • Get stamped in and out at every border: skipping immigration can mean fines or a bribe request later.
  • Buses sometimes do not stop at the border — get your stamp first, then board.
  • Unmetered taxis quote high to foreigners; agree the price up front.
  • Downtown is a busy trade zone: keep bags zipped, carry only the cash you need for the day, and keep receipts for anything you buy.
  • Buying goods to resell, or carrying more than the personal-use limit into Brazil or Argentina, can mean seizure, fines or worse at the border.
  • Summer heat and humidity are real; plan the dam and falls for the morning.
